Aiming to create a series of urban gyms sited in unusual (and hard to let) spaces, the Gymbox brand breaks the mould of aspirational, white-box fitness clubs by offering a more stimulating, club-inspired environment. BKD has transformed a former underground car-park into the blueprint for a new series of spaces, using the building’s concrete structure as a dramatic stage-set, and adding bold interventions. Directional markers help visitors navigate the space, with glazed tiles leading to changing rooms and railway sleepers for the reception desk. The striking visual centre-piece – a full-sized boxing ring – provides an area for self-defence and kickboxing classes.
