A response to the visual patchwork of enclosed spaces framed by handmade walls that shape the British Landscape, Ben Kelly’s 'Enclosure' comprised three separate walls, each built with techniques and stone native to three different parts of Britain – South Wales (Blue Pennant sandstone), the Lake District (Borrowdale volcanic) and Scotland (Whinstone).
The installation explored how rural life has changed and raised questions about conflicting uses of the countryside as leisure space, agricultural resource, or threatened wilderness that should be protected from human intervention.
Enclosure formed a part of the ‘Land’ themed section of the Southbank Centre’s Festival of Britain 60th Anniversary Celebrations.
