MORE INFORMATION

BKD were invited to design signage and wayfinding for the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester to complement the new glass and brick extension to the gallery, designed by architects MUMA. BKD used the module of a brick to carry the required signage information. Etched, glazed, brick slips were commissioned with bespoke stainless steel and timber arrows to create a minimal, yet strong graphic wayfinding system. Externally the language of brick hods were used as 3D signage to carry credits and titles for artists sculptures.

Responding to the extensive refurbishment and remodelling of the building, the signage provides a unifying element that stitches together the

variety of distinct architectural styles. The finished result reflects the spirit of the Whitworth, whilst remaining sensitive to its architectural context.

In addition, and in collaboration with typography specialist Paul Barnes, BKD developed the bespoke typography for the identity, signage and wayfinding system.
